Cubs and Padres again in the Wild Card. Who is watching where?

Thread summary
- You should check out one of the neighborhood taverns on Pulaski, just south of Irving Park. (shared by @IrvingParkIrene, #2)
- The only catch is that some of them get packed to capacity and might have a line to get in right at 6:00 PM, so you would be cutting it close with your sitter timeline. (shared by @LoganSquareLarry, #3)
- An Uber back to Portage Park will be pricey with surge pricing, but it is a playoff game! (shared by @NorthalstedNate, #4)
- What the original poster decided: I am going to shoot for that and try to get there by 5:45. (#7)
My husband has to work late for the game tomorrow, but I managed to get our sitter to stay until 9:00 PM. I really want to get out of the house to watch the first few innings, but I am not looking for a full blown Wrigleyville experience on a Tuesday. We are over by Irving Park and Central, so I am hoping to find a place on the NW Side, maybe somewhere off the Blue Line or the Irving Park bus. Any recommendations for a bar that is not going to be wall to wall screaming college kids, but still has a good game atmosphere? I need to be able to get an Uber and get home reliably before 9. Just want a decent burger and a cold beer with fellow fans.
You should check out one of the neighborhood taverns on Pulaski, just south of Irving Park. The one near the library usually has a good crowd for Cubs games. It is mostly neighborhood regulars and some families grabbing dinner. It will be full, but it is not the kind of place where people are doing shots and standing on chairs. You will definitely want to get there before first pitch to get a seat though, especially if you want to sit at the bar.
If you want something a little more lively than a corner tavern but still not a total madhouse, a lot of the breweries in Logan Square will have the game on. The one near the California Blue Line stop has huge projector screens and the crowd is usually energetic but not obnoxious. It is an easy trip for you down the Blue Line. The only catch is that some of them get packed to capacity and might have a line to get in right at 6:00 PM, so you would be cutting it close with your sitter timeline. Food is usually better than standard bar fare too.
I know you said no Wrigleyville, but you are missing out! The energy for a playoff game is what makes it fun. You do not have to go to one of the huge places right on Clark. There are plenty of great spots along Halsted that will be absolutely electric but a little more manageable. The game is what it is all about. You take the train, you soak up the atmosphere with thousands of other fans, you feel the whole neighborhood buzzing. It is a playoff game against the Padres, you have to do it right! An Uber back to Portage Park will be pricey with surge pricing, but it is a playoff game!
If getting home on time is the main priority, have you thought about heading the other way? We are just going to the big sports restaurant in Rosemont's entertainment district. It is a five minute drive from you, parking is a breeze, and you will be surrounded by fans without any of the city traffic or train nonsense. It is definitely more of a suburban family vibe, but the screens are massive and you will be back home with ten minutes to spare before your sitter has to leave.
The little Polish spot on Milwaukee in Jackowo that does burgers is always surprisingly chill for games. More of a dinner crowd that happens to be watching.
Wow, thank you all for the fantastic suggestions. NorthalstedNate, you make a compelling case, but I think a playoff game on Halsted is a bridge too far for me on a weeknight with the clock ticking! The Rosemont idea is smart, but I think I want to stay in the city proper for the vibe. That tavern on Pulaski that IrvingParkIrene mentioned sounds like exactly what I am looking for. I am going to shoot for that and try to get there by 5:45. Thanks again everyone, and Go Cubs!
