Illinois has been slow to put its Climate Displacement Act into action. The law created a task force to study how people relocating because of climate disasters could affect the state, but the panel has not yet met and lawmakers have extended reporting deadlines.

The planning effort is intended to examine potential demands on infrastructure and resources, along with effects on current residents and newcomers. Those questions extend to Chicago and its suburbs as part of the statewide review.

The first report is due in December. Responsibility for appointing task force members rests with Gov. JB Pritzker, legislative leaders and the heads of several state agencies.
