Santos joins Gould in Bears record book with 58-yard kick at Soldier Field

Cairo Santos added his name alongside Robbie Gould’s in the Bears’ record book Thursday night, making a 58-yard field goal against the New England Patriots at Soldier Field. The kick matched the longest field goal in franchise history and helped Chicago secure a primetime victory on Oct. 22.

The record-tying attempt came after Santos had struck an upright on a 53-yard attempt earlier in the fourth quarter. His successful kick later in the game surpassed his previous career best of 55 yards by three yards, turning a late scoring opportunity into a personal milestone as well as a team achievement.

Chicago led by six points when Santos lined up for the longer attempt. A miss would have given New England the ball with time to threaten that lead. Instead, Santos converted, adding three points and giving the Bears more breathing room in the closing stages of the contest.

According to Pro Football Reference’s Stathead database, Gould established the Bears’ 58-yard benchmark during the 2013 season. Santos’ kick also ranks as the third-longest field goal made at Soldier Field. That puts the play in both the franchise’s record book and the history of its Chicago home stadium.

For Bears fans, the milestone came with a useful result in the standings: Chicago improved to 5-2. The team now has a break before its next scheduled game, a Monday night matchup against the Seattle Seahawks on Nov. 2 in the Pacific Northwest. Santos heads into that stretch with a new career best and a share of a franchise record that had stood since 2013.
