White Sox playoff paths hinge on final two games at Rate Field

Chicago, IL|Sports|

By The Chicago Forum

The White Sox enter the final two games of the regular season with a division championship still within reach. As of Saturday, September 26, Chicago trailed the Cleveland Guardians by one game in the American League Central, leaving the weekend series against the Colorado Rockies at Rate Field central to the team's postseason plans.

Chicago's clearest route to the division title requires two White Sox victories and at least one Cleveland loss. That combination would give the teams identical records, with the White Sox taking the division because they hold the head-to-head tiebreaker. Chicago could not clinch on Saturday. Cleveland, however, could secure the title that day with a victory over Kansas City and a White Sox loss.

The distinction matters for Chicago fans hoping to attend playoff baseball. An AL Central championship would make the White Sox the American League's No. 2 seed and send them directly to the Division Series, which they would open at Rate Field. Their opponent would be either the Guardians or the eventual American League West champion.

If the standings remained unchanged, the White Sox would instead enter the postseason as the sixth seed and travel to Houston for a best-of-three Wild Card Series beginning Tuesday. The Astros led the AL West at the time of the report, but Texas remained another possible opponent. A wild card finish would put Chicago on the road against whichever of those teams wins the West.

Elsewhere in the American League bracket, the Yankees and Red Sox were already locked into a Wild Card Series at Yankee Stadium beginning Tuesday. Tampa Bay held the league's top seed and would face the winner of that matchup. The AL Central champion would occupy the other Division Series slot reserved for a division winner receiving a first-round bye.

For fans following the final weekend, the White Sox finish with two games against Colorado at Rate Field while Cleveland plays twice at Kansas City. Texas closes its schedule against Minnesota in the Twin Cities, and Houston faces the Athletics in Sacramento. Those results will determine whether Chicago's postseason begins with a road Wild Card Series or a Division Series opener at home.
